Experiential Marketing
Image : http://www.flickr.com
Experiential Marketing, sometimes called "XM", is a trendy term used in the business press to describe a category of marketing activities that requires a direct encounter with a customer. This direct encounter is different from the majority of marketing activities which are mostly passive in nature.
For example, advertising is a very passive medium that bombards the customer with messages that need to be listened to or read. Print advertising requests the reader to stop and read the message; in most cases, we skim over the ad or just ignore it. In fact, most ads never get noticed. Luckily, modern day Homo Sapiens have developed an "internal TiVo" that automatically deletes most advertisements (this is a basic survival characteristic for the species).
Experiential marketing describes an encounter with a customer that makes them feel something. Walking through a department store recently, an attractive woman salesperson sprayed me with perfume as I walked by the cosmetics counter. It was an aggressive act, but it was a powerful encounter. I will never go to that store again.
You encounter XM almost everyday. At a fine restaurant, the waiter brings a sampling of desserts to your table which looks and smells great. This approach is far more stimulating to your senses than the traditional question, "Saved room for dessert?"
Another common example is a Sunday morning newspaper advertisement for a new brand of shampoo that includes a sample for you to use. The personal contact with the brand is very powerful, albeit an expensive advertising technique. This is how I get most of my toiletries.
During the holidays, you are approached by the Salvation Army bell-ringers who look you in the eye while ringing that clanging bell. Somehow the whole experience reminds you of Christmas or Hanukkah past. It tugs at your heart, so you toss a quarter in the bucket (yes, I am kind of cheap).
A trendy XM tactic is the use of street teams that perform skits on street corners in urban areas; they sing and dance and cavort while delivering a message about an event or offering. You feel compelled to stop and watch these idiots prance around. Secretly, you guess that the performers all must have graduate degrees in dance or philosophy. You give a big sigh of relief that you changed your major to business from Theater Arts, or less this would be you dancing for minimum wage.
Thus, experiential marketing elicits a feeling.

Using Affiliate Directories in an Affiliate Marketing Program
Image : http://www.flickr.com
You could say that all the many excellent directories on the internet make it a lot easier to find websites that tie into subjects that you are interested in learning about. Of course, there is also further value to these directories than just leisure reading. They will look towards these directories as an excellent means of promoting an internet marketing venture. Or, perhaps, they could use such a directory to learn more about a particular program that might have an interest in. Those that wish to explore opportunities in affiliate marketing, affiliate directories may prove to be an excellent resource for a great deal of excellent information.
So, what exactly is an affiliate directory? It would be an online resource where links are placed that direct the person browsing the directory to the host website of the affiliate program. Actually, it would not be completely accurate to say that the links exclusively direct those browsing to an affiliate program's website. Sites that review such websites or blogs covering the subject of affiliate marketing could also be included in such directories. In many ways, an affiliate directory can be considered a complete, total, and comprehensive resource covering all facets of affiliate marketing.
How can you use an affiliate directory to succeed with affiliate marketing? Honestly, the answer to this question could be one that goes on for quite some time. There are multitudes of ways in which you can use an affiliate marketing program to boost your success potential. One way would involve simply using the directory as a resource to look for the top affiliate programs that are available. You could visit as many websites as you wish. After which, you could make a selection as to which affiliate marketing program to work with depending upon where you land.
If you have already selecting an affiliate marketing program to work with and have your own supporting website, you could submit links to your site into the affiliate directory. This would lead to a potentially significant amount of direct traffic to the site as those frequenting the directory might discover your link.
Also, in addition to the direct traffic from the affiliate directory, you would experience increased organic search engine traffic as well. Why is this? Mainly, the robots of the search engine would eventually index the links found within the directory. This will have the obvious impact of increasing search engine rankings. All links count and those placed in affiliate marketing directories will definitely help deliver positive SEO results.
Increasing the odds of success will frequently hinge on how many affiliate directories you submit links to. Placing links in one affiliate directory is certainly not going to yield the same impact as placing links in dozens of directories. As the old saying goes, it is a numbers game and the more directories you submit to, the greater the odds of success. Don't pay much attention to naysayers that put down the smaller or newer affiliate directories. They do have value.

Marketing and Advertising Costs
Image : http://www.flickr.com
Marketing and advertising are interrelated businesses. Marketing involves the sale of a product while advertising plays a very important role in its promotion. They are the two of the most essential factors in any business today. Hence, their demand is increasing tremendously. Big companies hire various marketing and advertising firms in order to sell their products. The primary requirement for any company that hires a marketing and advertising firm is a considerable budget for the same.
All companies depend to a great extent on marketing and advertising for the expansion of business, but this is especially true of branded companies. The main reason behind their exorbitant prices is the different marketing and advertising costs they bear. These costs generally include advertising through television, print, direct event marketing campaigns and other expenses related to their contracts involving large marketing and advertising staff. These make up the marketing and advertising costs of the establishment. The only difference is that the big companies prefer to utilize very expensive and high quality marketing and advertising of their products or business. This expensive marketing and advertising chosen by them costs them a great deal and this reflects in the price of their products.
At times, the market is completely saturated and there are not many sales. At such times certain companies eliminate their marketing and advertising costs by making use of other options available. For instance, they personally contact their potential clients so that their marketing and advertising costs during that period is zero.
Through marketing and advertising, a direct connection is established between the public and the firm. This is achieved through television, radio or newspapers. Hence, marketing and advertising for any business organization is necessary and hence the involved cost for advertisements must be planned in a systematic manner keeping in mind company requirements and the financial potential of the company.

What is Referral Marketing?
Image : http://www.flickr.com
One of the things that I love to do is learn. I swear that I'm a seminar junkie. Live seminars, webinars, teleseminars - you name it and I'm there. I attended one such seminar about a couple of years ago. This particular seminar was called a "Marketing Bootcamp".
I don't know about you but when I think bootcamp, I think army; and when I think army, I think combat, in your face and general discomfort. Don't get me wrong, the army is a good thing; it's just not for me. As a matter of fact, my father was a navy man (err go, I'm a navy brat) and he told me that he didn't think I was cut out for "bootcamp". I think he was right!
This particular marketing bootcamp was a good information session with great suggestions on how to grow your business. It gave you key factors in what you need to do to market your business and the results that you could expect. The presenter knew his stuff and did a good job engaging the audience. All in all I thought the whole thing was pretty darn good and being a bit of a marketing maven myself that's quite a compliment.
So the "seminar" is winding up and I'm thinking I might have been wrong about the bootcamp thing. There was no combat, no one was in my face, and I certainly wasn't feeling any discomfort...AND then it happened. I went up to the speaker to thank him for a great seminar and to talk about the "offer" of a free marketing audit. He took my information and then proceeded to ask me for THREE names of people who I think would be interested in a marketing audit. He said that his business was built on referrals and that he used "referral marketing" to build his business.
I'm not just remembering the bootcamp thing; I'm feeling it. I'm very uncomfortable and feeling like this guy is "in my face". I had never met this person before that day and am not familiar with his company or reputation and he wants me to divulge confidential information about my colleagues so he can call them to get business. He called this "referral marketing". I told him that I would have to think about it and then I high-tailed it out of there.
For the record, this is NOT "referral marketing". This is a high-pressure way to collect names for prospecting with the added value of making it look like a referral. Referral marketing is a carefully crafted system built on relationships and reputation. If done properly, it is one of the best and most cost effective ways to create consistent qualified leads from people who know, like and trust you. I encourage business owners all the time to use referral marketing. It's my area of expertise and I'm proud of it. But this was different and wrong!
Building a referral marketing system is one of the smartest things you could do for your business and here are four steps to help you do it right:
- Define a target market(s) for referrals
- Develop a referral source education system
- Create offers & execution strategy for referral marketing
- Build a referral follow up and conversion strategy
Remember, nurture the relationship with your clients and strategic business partners and you will create a flood of new business without spending a dime on advertising. That's referral marketing!

Hurricane Marketing
Image : http://www.flickr.com
Have you heard of Hurricane Marketing yet? Well, that is because I just made it up. But let me explain to you what it is. You see, some marketing consultants talk about; The Perfect Storm of marketing. What they are saying is that smart marketing is really a multiplicity affect of all your combined marketing efforts; everything from signage and location to word of mouth Buzz and referrals. This makes a lot of sense right?
Sure it does, but let's take this one step further and talk about the new paradigm of Hurricane Marketing; a flurry of marketing efforts and a storm surge of activity. The winds of change are upon us and we are talking a high-level category of strategic planning here. What we are talking about is the new innovative and future of Marketing; I call it Hurricane Marketing and you need this in your business to win markets, crush the competition and create change in your market sector.
You see the Hurricane Marketing Plan was born out of the ultra-successful Secret Bonzai and Blitz Marketing Plan, which I created in the late 1980s. Hurricane marketing is literally sending out teams of people to promote your product and service to every potential customer or client whether commercial or consumer and doing so at Soccer Fields, businesses and even homes. Blanketing the coastlines with a sea fury of Hurricane Force and the power of presence to drive your business to success. You will be hearing more about Hurricane Marketing in your future, but better get on the ball, as your competition will too. Consider all this in 2006.
